HOMES Act Retrofit Program Incentive for Energy Savings

by | | Uncategorized

The HOMES Act program being considered on Capitol Hill is designed to give consumers incentives for energy savings.  By reducing energy use anywhere from 20 to 50 percent, homeowners can receive rebates from $2,000-$8,000.  The bill currently has many stipulations for both the HVAC contractor and the type of reduction, but the bill is raising awareness of the importance of energy-saving measures.

From a heating and air conditioning perspective, energy efficiency has been built in to the newest units.  If you have an opportunity to upgrade, seriously consider it.  If you are approaching the 10-year mark on your unit, now is the time to look at replacements – before you have a problem.  When it’s time for your routine system inspection, ask your HVAC professional for some energy-saving recommendations particular to your home.

One of the most energy-efficient investments is a geothermal heat pump.  It can be three to five times more efficient at providing heat than a gas or oil furnace, and 30-50 percent more efficient than an air conditioner or heat pump for cooling.  Geothermal heat pumps use the earth’s free, renewable energy for heating and cooling.  Through an underground loop system, the geothermal unit exchanges energy between your home and the earth.  While a geothermal heat pump’s initial installation can be more expensive, the monthly energy cost savings can be up to 60 percent less than other systems.  Under the HOMES Act incentive program, the reward would potentially be between $4,000 and $8,000 according to the current rebate guidelines.  Together with the lifetime guarantee and the continued energy savings, these incentives just might make good sense.
