If Not Geothermal, Then What?

by | | Uncategorized

If, after our last post, you’ve decided that a geothermal heat pump is simply not in your future, but you want to replace your HVAC system with an energy-efficient alternative, consider an air source heat pump. These units have many advantages that can save you money and maintain a healthy environment.

Keeping with the concept of moving heat from place to place, heat pumps do not burn fossil fuels. They take heat from outdoor air and move it through indoor air ducts. A reversing valve allows the system to cool by releasing heated air from your home. Refrigerant cools the air down and moves it back into your home, providing a cooling effect. If you don’t have air ducts in your home, don’t worry. You can get a mini-split heat pump, which is the ductless version of an air source heat pump, with all the advantages of the system in a small size.

Air source heat pumps can cut your electric use by 30-40 percent, and may lower your home’s carbon emissions. They usually turn on and off less frequently than a traditional gas furnace, and they overcome the “cold spot” syndrome of other heating sources. They are especially comfortable because the warmth from a heat pump is distributed evenly throughout the home. However, the milder heat generated by an air source heat pump may take some getting used to, especially if you’ve had the intense heat of a gas or oil-burning furnace. For cooling purposes, air source heat pumps dehumidify efficiently, and distribute the cool air just as evenly, making your home cooler and more comfortable in warm weather. Finally, an air source heat pump needs very little maintenance, so once you have it professionally installed by a qualified HVAC technician, you can relax and enjoy being enveloped by comfortable heating and cooling.
